SUSTAINABILITY Cool Roofs Improve Sustainability

If a roof is unable to reflect heat from sun and shade the energy, it can have a negative impact on temperature inside the building

Cool roof coatings are one that has been designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than a standard roof coating. Thermilate e-coat made by adding highly reflective type of ceramic spheres to elastomeric coating, provides roof sheet a covering, or a highly reflective coating.

Substituting a cool roof for a warm roof reduces conduction of heat into the building, convection of heat into the outside air, and thermal radiation of heat into the atmosphere. This benefits our buildings, our cities, and our planet.

Benefits of Cool Roofs

A cool roof can benefit a building and its occupants by:

  • Reducing energy bills by decreasing air conditioning needs
  • Improving indoor comfort for spaces that are not air conditioned, such as garages or covered patios
  • Decreasing roof temperature, which may extend roof service life.
  • Increasing the life of roof sheets from UV degradation and corrosion

Beyond the building itself, cool roofs can also benefit the environment, especially when many buildings in a community have them. Cool roofs can:

  • Reduce local air temperatures (sometimes referred to as the urban heat island effect)
  • Lower peak electricity demand, which can help prevent power outages
  • Reduce power plant emissions, including carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxides, and mercury, by reducing cooling energy use in buildings.
